OUR CLOSING REUNION EVENT

7 JUNE 2003

It was a beautiful sunny day and around 375 people streamed into the school to join us for this event. People came from as far a field as Liverpool, although many were still living locally, or within the Oxford City boundary. We met an old Headmaster and some his senior Staff right through to staff who left quite recently. There were also several of the past admin staff who came along. Past pupils were amazed how many staff they remembered, and some staff who remembered many of the pupils, for one reason or another! Philip Pullman (now a famous children’s writer), a past member of the English Dept, was able to join us for the afternoon too.

Everyone was asked to put on a sticky label giving their name and the years they were in the school - so many people could remember when they here! but it lead to much hilarity to start the afternoon.

The many “Down Memory Lane” photographs were enjoyed by everyone – we heard many gasps of amazement as stories flowed out about the events depicted. There was a photograph showing a sports cup presentation to a young girl – the cup was still around in school (and shined up!) and was presented to her again on this day for her to keep!
Everyone enjoyed the refreshments and sat around swapping stories and memories. Many took the opportunity to look around the school building as it is now, and talk with the present staff, before it closes in July.

There was a book of photographs showing the school as it was when it was built and opened in 1957. Each original black and white photograph was matched up with a current colour photograph of exactly the same view – what changes there have been, even the uniforms and layout of the classrooms.

There was so much talked about, and old friends “reunited” – it was really hard to get everyone out at the end of the event – they didn’t want to go!

It had been a really successful event.
